[Verso 1]

                D Am G D Am G
Well, there's a little tin tavern that sits on the Wolfe County line
           D Am G D Am G
And that's where I met Martha one Sunday, trading wild cherry wine
            D Am G D Am G
She reached back in the shed and said, "Fred, I got just what you need
           D Am G D Am G
Lord, it's quick and it's cold and they call it that ol' Dixie speed"

[Verso 2]

          D Am G D Am G
I went to workin' for Martha, that summer, she showed me the ropes
                D Am G D Am G
She said, "This life's like your muffler a-hangin' on to hillbilly hope"
       D Am G D Am G
We got chased out of Spencer by a dog with a few mouths to fed
           D Am G D
And it's a rough, rowdy road when you're drivin' that ol' Dixi speed

[Refrão]

               Am7 G D
And mama ain't home, daddy fell over
               Am7 G D Am G
Lft the baby alone, crawlin' out in the clover

[Verso 3]

          D Am G D Am G
We made a killin' one winter, swear it seemed like the whole town was hooked
         D Am G D Am G
Turned a quite a few prom queens to zombies and some kings into crooks
      D Am G D Am G
And I ain't no exception, no way, no, ma'am, you best believe
          D Am G D
I used to float like a boat 'til I revved up that ol' Dixie speed

[Verso 4]

            D Am G D Am G
And I had a few friends that made it, cleaned their train and kept it right on the tracks
         D Am G D Am G
I got as far as Mount Sterling 'til I slipped and the law drug me back
     D Am G D Am G
I go in on the weekends and every Monday, those fools set me free
      D Am G D
I sit out in the yard with a jar of that hard Dixie speed

[Refrão]

           Am7 G D
Mama ain't home, daddy fell over
               Am7 G D
Lft the baby alone, crawlin' out in the clover

Well, I've burnt down this ol' cabin and, my baby, she's sad and blue
  D Am G D Am G
I said I saved a little bit and heaven knows a little bit will do
   D Am G D Am G
So put me on a steamboat and throw me in a big parade
D Am G D Am G
Lay me by the water, let me die beneath that pine-top shade
