Hero Son

[Intro ]
C

[Verso 1]

                           F
I heard it on the news the other night.
                      C
Another local boy had paid the price.
                               G
But it was different this time cuz I knew
                         C
the hero's daddy and his uncles too.
                                F
Well there were flowers and the book to sign.
                            C
There was a kneeler and the mourners' line.
                      G
I saw a mother barely hanging on
                          C
as father looked upon his hero son.

[Refrão]

          G C
That hero son fought for us all.
                G C
And though he's gone, his spirit lives on.
                                 Am
He volunteered to fight the fight
                                 Am
to help preserve our way of life.
                           G C
So say a prayer for him tonight, that hero son.

[Verso 2]

                        F
I left the chapel and I stepped outside.
                         C
A man was folding up the stars and stripes.
                          G
A little tear was rolling down his cheek.
                         C
He turned to me and he began to speak.
                           F
He had a boy who served in Vietnam
                             C
and every week that good boy wrote his mom.
                                G
The letters stopped. He can't remember when.
                      C
He never saw his hero son again

[Refrão]

          G C
That hero son fought for us all.
                G C
And though he's gone, his spirit lives on.
                                 Am
He volunteered to fight the fight
                                 Am
to help preserve our way of life.
                           G C
So say a prayer for him tonight, that hero son.
