One Room School

Intro
G D G

[Verso 1]

G
On a little hill in a little cove,
D
Stands an old wooden building
       G
with a pot-bellied stove
G
A hard-working teacher and an old hand bell,
    D
Now I know you all remember it well.

[Verso 2]

G
With readin' and writin' and 'rithmetic,
D G
The cod-liver oil we just had to take;
G
But the cocoa malt we'll never forget,
       D G
From a beautiful one room school.

[Refrão]

       C
With a pot-bellied stove
        G
and the floor boards creaked,
D G
When it rained the roof nearly leaked;
        C
We were happy as a lark
       G C
and we didn't make a peep,
       G D G
In our beautiful one room school.
     G D G
In a beautiful one room school.

[Verso 3]

G
To go to the bathroom you had to insist,
    D G
Out through the cloakroom, oh, what a mess!
G
If the rain was pouring what could you do?
    D
Put on your boots and your raincoat, too.

[Verso 4]

          G
But if it wasn't rain it was probably snow,
    D G
Out to the outhouse you must go.
G
To a tiny little seat with a tiny little hole,
     D G
In a beautiful one room school.

[Verso 5]

A
Probably the biggest event of all,
        E A
Was the Christmas concert in the Orange Hall;
A
People would come from far and near,
   E
To hear all the little voices there.

[Verso 6]

       A
And in Junior Red Cross we'd also sing,
   E A
Or act out a poem or some silly thing;
A
And when we sang The Ode,
                 D
our voices would ring,

[Verso 7]

A E A
"When sun rays crown thy pine-clad hills"
D
We were happy as larks
       A D
and we didn't make a peep,
     A E A
In a beautiful one room school.
